Understanding the CEFR

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is an international standard for describing language proficiency on a six-level scale — from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery).

It’s used worldwide by teachers, learners, and institutions to measure progress and set clear, realistic goals. Each level describes what learners can do in English — in speaking, writing, listening, and reading — making it easy to track your development over time.

Whether you’re studying for a Cambridge, IELTS, or another international exam, the CEFR allows your level to be recognized and compared globally

Watch this short video from Cambridge University Press & Assessment to see how the CEFR connects to major international exams and supports meaningful language learning.

Why it Matters for You

The CEFR helps you:

- Track your progress using an internationally recognized standard

- Choose the right course for your current level

- Set achievable goals for your next step or certification
